We need your advice in Shelton, Washington!
ADAGE is going through the permit process to build an incinerator near our town. Although the majority of our residents here don't want the incinerator...our county commissioners and Shelton Port commissioners refuse to listen to our concerns..we've been shut out. One of our commissioners -Tim Sheldon-is also a State Senator..and he's the most vocal about keeping a vote referendum from going through. The citizens want a vote..but the commissioners are saying that it would be discrimination to hold a vote against ADAGE. This is what Tim Sheldon said to Seattle's King TV News yesterday:
"We don't have a 711 in Mason County. Should we put 711 on the ballot? I think all the other convenience stores might get out and campaign against that." The commissioners say if the air agency..(.ORCAA-in Washington State)--determines the ADAGE plant is safe...the county and its' voters cannot block a legal business from coming into town." More than once I've heard a commissioner say that it's discrimination to speak out against the incinerator.
Do you have any advice for us? There are supposed to be public hearings next month per the permit process..and we sure could use some help. We're also facing a 2nd incinerator..a smaller one--that would be located right in downtown Shelton. It's very scary to most people..who believe that these incinerators will compromise our health and the health of our children and grandchildren...yet the officials we've elected to represent us...won't listen to us. Tim Sheldon even called those against ADAGE.."kooks".
Please let me know what I can do...what would you do?
Thank you,
Tracey
